I like how the author subtly shows both the expectations and disappointment of the wife because of the promise made to her. The fact that he can do this and also tell a good story in only six sentences is amazing. I hope there's a sequel :-)
Fun post, Michelle; really enjoyed John's "Six," and will keep my fingers crossed that he can kick the habit. I'm not a smoker, but a chocolate lover, and I can't imagine how hard it must be to say goodbye forever to something you so love.
